Three Days In The Desert: A Coachella Preview
One week from right now I’ll be driving through the Southern California desert, passing the giant wind farms and heading to the Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival (Coachella). The festival has come a long way from its humble beginnings in 1999. The way I hear it people were herded together in massive unruly crowds, burning up in the sun with no water to be found anywhere. All the stories paint a picture of every man for himself out in the desert. Things have definitely changed since 1999.
This year will be my third Coachella and I have nothing but compliments for the people who put it all together. It’s incredible how a three day festival with so many people in attendance can run that smoothly. There is enough space for all the festival goers, water stations readily available, many different food and drink options and tons of cool things to look at. Keep up the good work Coachella.
Enough sucking up to Goldenvoice about their execution of festival logistics, it’s time for the important stuff, the music. Coachella is a wonderful chance to see artists you love with 100,000 of your closest friends and a great opportunity to investigate performers you would never purchase a ticket for normally. So, without any further adieu, its the artists I’m excited about for Coachella 2015.
Let’s just get the obvious out of the way right now, this is Drakechella. Drake is the most popular artist, maybe even person, on Earth right now. Every song on his new album was on the Billboard Hot 100. That’s crazy! Drake has so many songs, I have no idea what he will perform and who might accompany him on stage. Anything is possible. What I really want though is for Drake to perform Pop That. If/When that happens, I’m losing my mind.
The other headliner I’m excited for is AC/DC. They may be old, they may not have any current songs, but who cares. Thunderstruck, Hells Bells, TNT, Dirty Deeds and of course Back In Black; those are all great songs and I could still name more. If everything goes to plan AC/DC should be really fun and the perfect way to end night one.
Two other rock acts I’m excited to check out are Alabama Shakes Hozier. Alabama Shakes always bring it. I’ve only heard them on the radio or television, but never live so seeing the full force of Alabama Shakes will hopefully be an experience. As for Hozier, we’ve all heard Take Me To Church a million times, but it’s still good. I’ve also heard him perform live on local radio and he sounded great. Hopefully Hozier doesn’t disappoint.
Bringing things back to the hip hop world, The Weeknd and Raekwon and Ghostface Killah should be interesting performances. I have no idea what Raekwon and Ghostface are going to do together. It could only be tracks from Only Built 4 Cuban Linx and I’d be happy. Seeing Raekwon in all his short round glory in always fun and I really hope Ghostface brings his giant eagle arm bracelet. If Raekwon and Ghostface are bringing the grimy Wu Tang sound, then The Weeknd is bringing sex. I don’t know what else to call his musical stylings. There is a real concern an orgy may break out in the crowd once he starts singing. Do we get an Ariana Grande cameo, I have my fingers crossed.
Coachella is also known for all the world famous DJs on the lineup. The big names this year are Alesso and David Guetta, but I’m excited for Flosstradamus and Alvin Risk. Both artists sets always go hard. I saw Alvin Risk once before and before his set started he looked very unassuming, then he started playing and hit the room with a ton of bass. I’m hoping for a repeat.
Sunday at Coachella is all saints day, St. Vincent, St. Lucia and St. Motel. Whoever created the lineup had to put those artists together on purpose. Each band has a good vibe that should be enjoyable in a festival setting.
Other notable acts for me are Florence and the machine ODESZA. Florence is a great performer, so her set should be a good time. I’m still not that familiar with ODESZA, but everyone keeps talking about them, so I have to do my due diligence and check them out. I also might check out Ryan Hemsworth but that’s only to confirm if he is the lost Hemsworth brother and if Thor is at his stage.
