Watch the Thrones
Sundays are about to change. Winter is coming. HBO’s Game of Thrones returns April 12th, but do not think for a second you have an adequate amount of time to brace for the show’s return. AMC’s Mad Men returns the week before on April 5th. This is your last Sunday of freedom before the best show and the most fun show on television return.
Mad Men is the best show on television. It is smart, dramatic, engaging, visually pleasing, and even funny. Mad Men checks all the boxes. The stories are deep and rich, highlighting the careful balance it takes to navigate daily life. The attention to detail in each episode makes the most avid Wire fan stand up and applaud. A small detail hidden in the background one week is a clue to a larger ongoing problem that will come to a head at the conclusion of the season.
The characters are fully developed with clearly defined motives for all their actions. Many of them act like actual people you might come in contact with in your own life. Even when someone on the show behaves in a ridiculous or unexpected manner it is possible to trace their steps, and see why they acted the way they did.
Mad Men has also mastered the art of the teaser trailer. The scenes edited together at the end of each episode previewing the next week’s episode are brilliant. They shed zero light on what might happen next week, yet a split second image of a door closing puts me a frantic state wondering what is behind the door, who closed the door, and what building is the door in. An innocuous phrase like “I don’t want to” can mean anything in my head, even though I know next week I’ll find out they are just talking about lunch. Everything about Mad Men is the best.
Sometimes what is the best may not be the most fun. I can watch The Rock every time I stumble upon it on cable, but I’m not doing the same thing with Godfather II. Game of Thrones is the most fun show on television. It has swordfights, magic, nudity, and dragons. Game of Thrones transports the viewer to a different world where anything is possible. One scene can be in a castle with royalty plotting a nefarious scheme, then the next moment the screen is filled with a giant ice wall and guys with swords. The scope of the show is incredible, and it gets bigger and bigger each season.
Swords and Magic may not be your thing, but Thrones has dragons. There are large dragons that fly around the screen and blow fire on people and things. No other show has dragons, and a dragon wreaking havoc on the countryside is the definition of fun. All episode I wait in anticipation for the dragons to show up and do something awesome, and when they do it’s all smiles and high fives on the couch.
Relax this Sunday. Take a deep breath and get your bearings. Next Sunday when everything changes you need to be ready. The fun and drama are back. Dive into Mad Men then follow it up with a Game of Thrones chaser. Be warned though, there is bound to be a Monday morning hangover.
