Guilty Pleasure: Sugar
What can I say, I’m team Levine (By the way, happy birthday Adam) When the song starts and I hear Adam Levine’s SoCal bro affectation, I smile. However my day is going, it can only get better with a little Sugar.
Sugar is the definition of bubblegum pop. It’s light hearted, easy going and up beat. The bass line feels like the hot Southern California day. There is nothing resembling the sense of dread or loss that permeates through most of today’s recent hits. Ed Sheeran I’m looking at you. If Uptown Funk is the feel good hit big man on campus, Sugar is the star of the JV team.
That distinct Adam Levine falsetto makes you feel at home. It’s the pack of Fun Dip from your childhood. Man it tasted great, but you know better than to eat that stuff now. You still eat that stuff now though, we all do, it’s OK.
Those high pitch antics may be Adam Levine’s calling card, but they are all of ours as well. I’m fully confident that if alone in a car and sugar comes on, 100% of the population tries to belt it out just like Levine. Trying to duplicate Maroon 5 songs is the right of every freedom loving American. Not everyone is on team Levine, but everyone does try to sound like him.
So you’re still on the fence about the song. Weird, but watch the video again. Look at how happy all those people are. Look at how happy the band is to be at the weddings. Everyone is having a great time and that has got to move your feel good meter in the right direction.
So, sugar, yes please, won’t you come and put it down on me. I’m right here cause I need little love and little sympathy. You show me good lovin’, make it alright, need a little sweetness in my life.
I know you like it too, I won’t tell.
